Dean's Award for Graduate Research Excellence

Background

The award recognizes outstanding achievements by graduate students in research and creative practice prior to graduation from the program. Examples may include:

  • Being first author of a publication in a top-ranked journal
  • Leading a research or creative practice initiative that yields new conversations and possibilities for the student and the student’s field
  • Leading innovative convergent research with colleagues across fields or research activity that bridges the academy and society

Please note, this list is not meant to be comprehensive – each department or program can underscore what constitutes excellence in research, scholarship, or creative practice.

Guidelines

  • The student must be enrolled as a full-time graduate student in A&S during the 2023–2024 academic year.
  • The student must be in good academic standing and making progress in the degree program.
  • The achievement must have taken place within the previous two years. (The date of the award, publication, or performance should be between September 2021 and August 2023.)
  • The level of the achievement by the student must be viewed by the selection committee from the department or program as exemplary (how does this achievement demonstrate excellence in your department and the future of research in this area?). The nomination is meant to come from a group and endorsed by at least three faculty members involved in graduate student training.

Each department or program may nominate up to two graduate students for this award.

Students selected as semifinalists will give a three-minute public presentation about their work to a broad selection committee, who will designate the finalists for this award. Finalists will give lightning talks to a committee of faculty, university leaders, and external partners. Finalist must be available to speak at an October public even (date TBD).

Semifinalists will receive a $500 award, and finalists will receive a $1,500 award in addition to a certificate of recognition.

The deadline for nominations has been closed for Fall 2023. For questions, please contact Vice Dean Sophia Hayes
