Preparing for your I-20

Accepted International Students and the Form I-20

All international students that study in the United States need an I-20 Form, “Certificate of Eligibility for Non-immigrant Student Status.” After submitting the required documentation to the Office of Graduate Studies, international students will receive a Form I-20 from Washington University in St. Louis. You must also obtain a Form I-20 for any eligible dependents you plan to bring to the United States with you. Please let us know if you plan to bring eligible dependents.

Obtaining your I-20

Depending on your offer of admission, you will be required to submit all or some of the documents below. You will receive an email after your acceptance that will inform you which of these documents you need to obtain your I-20.

Items you may need:

  • Passport - Color scan of passport’s biographical pages must be emailed to artscigradadmissions@wustl.edu. This is required.
  • Student Status Form - This form provides information for OISS such as the proper spelling of your name, country of birth and your current visa status.
  • Affidavit - The affidavit is a statement of financial support. If someone other than Washington University (like a family member or yourself) is covering your tuition this form must be filled out.
  • Financial Documentation - Bank statements/certificates of deposits or other funding that show an amount that is equal to or more than the required amount to cover one year of studies. You must also obtain a Form I-20 for any eligible dependents you plan to bring to the United States with you. Please let us know if you plan to bring eligible dependents.
  • English Proficiency - An English proficiency test is required unless waived. We currently accept Duolingo, TOEFL, IELTS, and Gateway. You can view the full requirement and exemptions on the OISS website.

Tuition Cost

Fiscal year 2025-2026

Tuition:  $67,080
Fees:  $3,356
Living Expense:  $23,795
Dependent Cost:  $4,326

Current U.S. visa regulations require accepted applicants to provide proof that they are able to fund
their first year of studies. To calculate this amount, add the numbers together to get your total. If you don't have any dependents coming with you, do not include that amount.

To calculate your cost, add all the numbers together (minus dependent if you don't have one). This is the cost for one school year. If you have a scholarship or other funding, subtract that amount from the year total. This is the amount you will owe.
